Annalysing the double page spread of 'kerrang' magazine

IMAGES:
  • the images take up more of the space than the text
  • there are several smaller images with a white frame around them to make them stand out
  • the main image has a jagged cut edge around it to fit into the conventions of the music genre
  • the use of colour is white, black, grey and red, which represent masculine colours, therefore the colours represent the traget audience
  • the layout is not neat as it is quite untidy and jagged around the edges
  • the mise en scene relates to the music genre because the guitars, tatoos and messy hairstyles represents rock and the target audience

TEXT:

  • There is less text displayed on the pages than images because the younger tennagers prefer images and are less interested in reading

Analysing the contents page of ‘Kerrang’ magazine

Ø GENRE=rock
The images suggest the wildness
The tattoos also represent the genre

Ø AUDIENCE=older teenagers-mid thirties
There are a combination of artists that are different ages, therefore this represents that the target audience is a wide variety of ages.

Ø IMAGE
There are a variety of images used on the page, which are different sizes
The images relate to the music genre because they represent loud, noisy music, which is associated with rock
The tattoos and the weird facial expressions represent the madness of rock
The mise en scene=the use of the masks in one image relate to the genre
The body language of the artists (the hand language and the facial expressions) also relate to the genre
The colours used in the image are quite dull and dark as they represent males because males prefer simplicity and not colourful colours like females.
The colours follow the same colours used on the front cover
The layout of the images are jagged, which fikt into the conventions of the music genre
The page is split into 4 columns

Ø LANGUAGE
There is only use of two coloured fonts, which represent the target audience as they do not like a lot of bright colours due to preferring simplicity
The font type on the contents page is the same
The subheadings are highlighted yellow along with the page numbers highlighted in yellow to make it easier for the audience to see
The use of capital letters indicate that the magazine is targeted towards strong, dominant males
